A HISTORICAL INDEX OF THE PEOPLE AND PLACES OF THE STEWARTRY OF KIRKCUDBRIGHT

Welcome to the kirkcudbright.co website. The site is a celebration of the people and places in the former county of Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway. This is a relatively new website in which we are building a resource containing a variety of information to assist people interested in places in the Stewartry (or County) of Kirkcudbright, or the local history of the county as it existed prior to 1975 when county boundaries were removed and it became part of Dumfries and Galloway.

The website in its current format concentrates on three particular aspects of the country - its places, its people and its history.

Places
The first Ordnance Survey of Scotland was carried out in the first half of the 1850's. The maps produced are all available on the website of the National Libary of Scotland. We have indexed all the named places, hills, burns, woods, lochs, rivers, ancient monuments etc we could identify on these maps. Using the drop-down menu above you can see the list of each place found by parish. We have also harnessed the power of the Internet, where resources are available, to show the position of these named places etc on the 1st Ordnance Survey maps, on modern maps, in satellite views, Google street views and modern photographs..

Flickr Galleries
In the main, the photographic views of our county are contained on the Geograph and Flickr websites and have been specially chosen to complement this website. Many galleries relate to subjects within specific parishes so links to them are to be found on the page introducing that parish. Where gallery subjects relate to more than one parish gallery links are shown at the top of the left side column on this page. We are very grateful to the contributors of the images contained in the galleries for setting permissions for use in this way. They greatly compliment and enhance the content of our website.

People
Each parish index also gives access to researched information of the people of the county, both as transcribed text and as links to books and extracts available on the Internet.

Parish History
Extensive historical information, particularly in the form of scanned books, is becoming available on the Internet. Here we have built up an anthology of books and extracts both within our site and on other websites which we are freely able to access. Again these are broken down in to relevant parishes where possible, or linked to in the County menu above.

Naming
Throughout the site the terms County, Stewartry and Kirkcudbrightshire are used in an arbitrary fashion with no great weight being placed on any particular form. Surnames beginning with Mc (eg. McCartney) often appeared in old documents in the form M' (eg. M'Cartney). This website commonly converts M' to Mc to assist search engines to retrieve relevant surnames.

A great deal of work has been put into obtaining the information on the site and is copyright the author, James Bell, and of the other contributors to the website. Its intended use is to assist private individuals in their research. Information contained here may be copied and used to illustrate and publish such research, but may not be copied or published in any other way. In particular the publication of large sections of the information in any complete form is expressly prohibited. Information contained on third-party sites linked to are subject to their owner's restrictions.
