The death took place on Saturday morning after a short illness of Mr William Buchanan, farmer, Drumburn. He was in his 90th year and had farmed Drumburn for over 40 years, latterly having the assistance of his son Adam. He was a native of the parish of Hutton and Corrie, Dumfriesshire, and came to Colvend in 1862 as a ploughman with the late Mr Carson, Laggan.
He was afterwards employed at Southwick House Farm under the father of the late Sir Mark McTaggart Stewart. For a time he lived at Bogknowe, Southwick, and obtained employment at the granite quarries at Old Land, about 2 miles from Dalbeattie, and he walked to and from his work day and night, making a path for himself over the hills.
He afterwards became a granite polisher with Messrs D.H. & J. Newall, Dalbeattie, but gave this up and became a van-man with Messrs Glendinning, bakers, and through his journeys on their behalf, he became widely known in the surrounding parishes.
Mrs Buchanan died some years ago. Of a family of twelve, six sons and three daughters survive. He was buried at Colvend Churchyard.
