Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser, Friday, 21st May 1926 (extract).

The death occurred on Thursday last, at his residence, Terregles Bank, Dumfries, of Major Francis Xavier Maxwell, a native of Castle Douglas district and a well know public figure.

By his death there has been removed, at the age of 56 years, a member of one of the best known and highly respected old Dumfriesshire families. Born at Terregles bank, Major Maxwell was the eldest son of the late Robert Maxwell, Breoch, Buittle. For a considerable number of years he resided at Braehead, Maxwelltown, and only about a year ago acquired Terregles Banks where he went to live. Like all members of his family he was a devoted adherent of the Roman Catholic Church and was a regular attended of the Pro-Cathedral at Dumfries.

He is survived by his wife, and a son and a daughter. Mr Robert Maxwell, solicitor, Dumfries, is a bother.
